SaveThePoudre.org has one mission, to protect and restore the Cache la Poudre River. If you live in Northern Colorado, you’ve seen the iconic image of the nude people standing in the river with cardboard signs that read “SAVE the POUDRE.” For six years we’ve been printing a simplified, one color version of the photograph on t-shirts. Recently, we worked with Save the Poudre on printing the full color image on a light gray shirt. Flesh tones and water tend to be tricky to print, but we were ready for the challenge.
We used a technique called index printing, which is a simulated process print. Ten spot colors were used to create the full color image instead of printing cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK) to build the colors. With spot colors, you have more control over tonality and can put the image on different colored shirts. CMYK process prints have to stay on white shirts because the inks are transparent so when they lay on top of each other, they blend to make different colors.
